The New Design

All of you active followers of my blog have known I've been semi-unhappy with the updated version of my blog. And I've finally had enough. It's the day after my birthday and I decided that my blog has been in need of a new upgrade. I thus present to you all the new (and very improved) design. I am very happy with it!

On that note, here's to a new look and a look back at the original design (I don't miss it, lol) -

Writing to Write

I have been so wiped I haven't felt up for blogging, but I figured I needed to get something out at the very least, considering I feel very out of practice writing right now.

Exhaustion has overcome me, and I have a hard time staying focused for the duration of the day, a few hours of which I set aside for my real estate course. But outside of that.... Nada. I just don't have the energy--and therefore the mental capacity--to think of anything to write.

I finally got my self together long enough to edit the margins, approve the review, and order a proof copy of Shattered Lives just in the last hour and a half. It's certainly coming together so that's something at least. And maybe I won't know how to continue its sequel Fractured Hearts until the first book is no longer being edited. So I guess I should take a break from that. But then there's my other book in progress, The Agents of Unity. And I honestly can't think of how to continue from where I last left off. Then again, I barely remember where I left off it's been so long. Okay, 2+ weeks. But still, that's a long time for me to go without writing.

I really hope I can get some energy going for me soon because I hate being tired all the time. It's a sucky feeling, though unfortunately one I know all too well. But I generally come out of this, and I have hope there is a light at the end of this tunnel. And as soon as I'm out on the other side, I'm goign to write and write and write until I just can't go any more.

Although let me just say how good writing it feels writing this all out. Like I said, it's been too long.

Web-Presentation Posting - Delayed

I've been asked if my web-presentation video on self-publishing is out yet. Unfortunately, and I'm sorry to say this, but there's been a delay in filming. Due to health issues, school work, and other life interference, I have been unable to fully complete this project, and have thus been delayed by about a day or so. But there is good news: starting tomorrow I believe I will finally be able to get back at it, so please stay tuned—the video is coming, I promise! And I thank you for your patience.

School: An Unnecessary Feat?

I cannot begin to describe how difficult—and by "difficult" I mean un-motivating—it has been for me to attempt to continue on with my school work. After learning I don't necessarily need a degree, not to be a freelance editor at least, I keep asking myself: Why am I still working to complete my classes?

This doesn't mean I'm giving up. The end is in sight. And from there I will begin my online real estate course, with an additional writing, editing, and/or communications class. After all, communications is an incredibly special and important supplement to the work I'm doing and want to do, in more ways than I can even fully explain, myself.

Harder yet, is just how badly I want to focus on trying to get editing clients, get an editor myself for my soon-to-be published novel, Shattered Lives. If the name sounds familiar, it should—it's only the book I've been working on and talking about for the last few years. I'm also trying to write it's sequel, Fractured Hearts, along with a new potential-series, although it is currently just a single novel (whose official name/title has yet to be determined). I keep going back and forth between "Brigid Karena", "Karena Springs", or something else altogether. So there's that. Meanwhile I'm also in the works of creating my first presentation video (in what I hope will be a recurring webseries).

I'm powering through, but believe me, I am counting down the days I'm done with these classes!

The Self-Publishing Route: A Complex System - Coming Soon

As I write this, I am excited to announce that I am in the process of creating a PowerPoint presentation video, and I am currently 18 slides in (including my list of sources).

title "Self Publishing 101 & 102" my presentation video will take a deep(er) inside look into what it means to be self-published, what it takes, and learning how to protect yourself along the way. I have never seen anything like this, and I've always thought something like this would be extremely helpful. But as the famous quote goes (from the July 2017 QOTM) : "If there's a book you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it" -Toni Morrison.

In this case, the "book" just so happens to be a survivalists' guide, so-to-speak, for authors trying to break into and thus navigate the insane world that is self-publishing.

I expect I will be done with the creation of the slides come Thursday (I must break for the duration of the day -- homework!) and the filming an begin Friday-Saturday. EEK! How cool is that?!

On that note, I am signing off and going to sleep (although I have to be up at nine...but oh I'm so tired!)

Goodnight, good morning, and good...whatever.
Don't forget to keep your eyes peeled for further future announcements!

Writers and Editors Meetup - Coming Soon

I am currently in the works of creating a Writing and Editing meetup which will meet both in person and online. The online site has been up and running for sometime, despite the fact it hasn't been used despite the occasional post from when I first got it running to be sure it worked. However, it won't be in active use until after the New Year of 2019.

From: Pen Guardians, The official Meetup Site—
Welcome to our “Pen Guardians Writers & Editors Meetup” site! I am Sabrina S.K. Regan, manager, coordinator, and meetup creator. I don’t know much about the general Eugene Meetups site, but I am familiar with group spaces. This will function as the online site; it has been up and running for some time, despite the fact it hasn't been used despite the occasional post from when I first got it running to be sure it worked. Don't hesitate to have a look around and get familiar with our online site. For everyone's privacy, this online site is only visible to meetup members, which is why, following our first in-person meeting, I should have added you to our site. If it seems you are not an active member here, please click the "Join Now" button on the right hand side of this page to become a member.

Interested in joining? While the in-person meeting location has yet to be determined, you can still become a member of the online group (no charge) at groupspaces.com/PenGuardians/ (the link is also in my Favorites Link list). You will still be offered writing support, you can sell your own books, get instant feedback from other writers and editors alike, etc.

If you can't join in person, however, I do request the following submission form for formality purposes. Because this is a closed group, I'd like to know what it is you plan to bring to the table, and what you wish to get out of this group (something the in-person meeting will cover, hence the reason for this submission):

Name:
Age:
Are you a Writer, Editor, or both?
Do you have your own business? (this is only important to share if you wish to network with people)
What skills do you hope to bring to this meetup?
Things you'd like out of this group?
Is there a fun-fact about yourself you'd like to share?

An example response: I'm Sabrina, creator and manager of this meetup, and I have my own freelance editing business, Oaktree Editing Services. My goals are to get something [else] published, to become a well-established editor, and to hopefully get a magazine startup. I've been considering using this meetup eventually as a platform to get this dream underway. Fun fact about me: I've been writing since before I could write letters or even numbers -- just squiggles on a page.

Please, don't hesitate to join!
We'll be "live" January 2019

Well-Deserved Changes and Additions, In Life and In Blogs

It was time to give my blog a major update, including a new name and along with it a new URL. "Why?" you might be asking yourself. The answer is simple and well-deserved: I am so close to getting published that I decided to use this blog only as a how-to/a guide into the writing and editing trade (and market) and create an author blog under the original title: "The Secret Writer". You can already view my new author-blog @ regan-writes.blogspot.com

This is a very exciting time in my life right now, and thus I am incredibly proud to announce these changes, an announcement which also results in additional work for editing my blogs, but oh is it worth it! And it feels amazing--like I'm taking a breath of new oxygen.

Personal Freelance Editing Services - Coming Soon

I've trying to break into the freelance editing community for awhile now and I'm excited to announce I am finally making it official! I've built my own website, though it is currently still underway, but is so near to publication -- I'm hoping to have it DONE done by the end of this week. And in two weeks I'm joining the Eugene's Editor's Guild to network and learn how to expand my efforts. I'm very excited! It's now time for me to choose a business card. I have created a few, now I just have to narrow down my options. So stay tuned for the final announcement! It won't be much longer now.... ðŸ˜ŠðŸ–‰ðŸ–³ðŸ˜„

Absent For A Little While....

My health took a downward turn since my last post, making it rather difficult for me to get back at it again. But alas here I am, back in action. Sort of. I'm taking the time after writing this to update some stuff on the site, and of course I've got this brief little update going for me, too. Aside from all that, however, I'm not sure what else to add as of this moment so I'm taking a break again after this, though I promise not to stay away for as long as I did this time.

On that note, thanks for hanging in there and I am sorry again for the long wait!

When in Doubt! - Who vs. Whom

I can't remember if I've posted this before, but I am absolutely in love with this trick!

"When in doubt, try this simple trick: If you can replace the word with “he”' or “'she,” use who. If you can replace it with “him” or “her,” use whom" (Grammarly 2018).

Summer Reading - A Must Read For All Writers

I am currently reading a book for my summer Writing 301 - Editing and Publishing class, an incredible book through which I've discovered something rather inspiring, amazing, and now I want to share it here:

Only a few pages into the reading I feel I should share that it is my personal belief that if you are a [white] writer it is your responsibility to read LITERARY PUBLISHING IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY by Daniel Jose Older, Edited by Travis Kurowski, Wayne Miller & Kevin Prufer MILKWEED EDITIONS. And if you are a writer of color who feels as if they are getting rejected based off their books this is also for you.

The first chapter is "DIVERSITY IS NOT ENOUGH: RACE, POWER, PUBLISHING" featuring quotes such as the one I posted as this month's Quote of the Month from page 155. It also says "Of 3,200 children's books published in 2013, just 93 were about black people," according to a study by the Cooperative Children's Book Center at the University of Wisconsin" (157). And "This is the language of privilege the audacity of standing at the top of a mountain you made on the backs of others and then yelling at people for being at the bottom" (158). Older also quotes a fellow writer of color, Anika Noni Rose, who said in Vanity Fair:  "There are so many writers of color out there, and often what they get when they bring their books to their editors. they say, 'We don't relate to the character.' Well it's not for you to relate to! And why can't you expand yourself so you can relate to the humanity of a character as opposed to the color of what they are" (159).

This book might state facts that are (or at least should be) rather obvious and yet they are maddeningly eye-opening. It has made me want to take action, preach action, and help other writers no matter what race open their eyes in hopes they too will take this issue seriously, and also learn how to navigate the radically white [Publishing] Market.

You can find this book in PDF format online. And obviously it wouldn't be hard to find a printed version in a library.

TSW & More

Getting myself organized. It's harder than I realized it would be, but I'm doing it. Slowly and carefully. My first order of business is going to be to get rid of my Chronic Daily blog and turn it over strictly to the Facebook group for ease of access both for me, and as well as my readers, and I will be doing this as soon as I've posted this update. Following closely behind will be to start getting things ready for my newest & latest project: creating a magazine based off my blog. I will be using the Chronic Daily blog page to connect these, though the url/domain address will be changing. Needless to say if the layout appears familiar...there's the reason. But it won't be up and running until my third of order business is [well] under way, the final -- and rather broad -- order I'm focused on: starting a Eugene-based meetup. Based off my original magazine idea I wrote about long ago, I'll be calling my meetup "The Creative Coast" which will bring together a group of artistic people who are interested in making their creative passions into a printed and digital magazine meant for readers who are interested in the realm of fashion, photography, writing (nonfiction, fiction, and anything in between), painters, draw-ers, etc., jewelry makers, and more. (For additional ideas of the art that will be included (but certainly not limited to), see the link "block" at the end of this update.)

As I briefly touched on, the idea of this meetup will be to eventually create a magazine based off the arts, featuring too feminism-based and equality-based articles with an artistic spin. The magazine will be called "TSW" the acronym of which is based on my title for this blog "The Secret Writer". I wanted to pay attribute to this very blog, granted I wanted to call the meetup something for a variety of reasons I'm not going to go into at the moment as there are many. What I will say, however, is that this is one project I'm not going to abandon. I'm heavily dedicated to it and it is going to happen.

Alas, when the time comes we will be welcoming submissions from anyone and everyone who lives (on the west coast, to start) for both the digital and printed magazine. But that's a distant reality at this very moment as I have yet to create the meetup, and will be doing it once I configure all my blogs accordingly. So that's what is happening as I type this update. Needless to say "The Secret Writer" will not be going anywhere. In fact, I hope to strengthen it even further.

Stay tuned for further updates regarding "The Creative Coast" meetup and "TSW" magazine 💖 !

It's a New Month Which Means There's New Changes! (part 2)

Yes this is the same blog! If you're a returning reader, however often you've visited, you've undoubtedly noticed there's been a massive change! We can finally say goodbye to the old eclectic style, which served it's purpose, but alas it's time to say hello to the new-and-[hopefully] improved look of "The Secret Writer". There is a rather clogged menu bar, but alas that's what you get with blogger since it doesn't have it's own menu bar--you've got to create one via pages, and there's no option to hide their headlining previews. However with that issue aside, I feel like I've made "...Secret Writer" much more navigable. Granted I want you to tell me what you think. Did you like the old design better? What could be improved with this design*? Any other comments, questions, or free written opinions are more than welcome. Have fun navigating! And don't forget the menu bar ≡ up top for further information, short stories, etc. And don't forget: Those of you whom aren't returning readers, check out the image of the original look so you can compare the two.

*Keep in mind Blogger restrictions may limit my ability to make certain changes

It's a New Month Which Means New Changes!

What to Expect and What to Look Out For:

  1. Have you ever wondered how to navigate The Secret Writer? Or even what it's for? Wonder no more: I've added an 'about my blog' page to "Blog Stuff"! I've also updated and added the following:
  2. A new QOTM
  3. Shared images coming soon - mostly writing oriented of course, though I think it's good to play around and have some less-than serious photos of, say, a cat sleeping with his stuffie
  4. Possible design change - I've got a few in the works though none that I've been happy about. But I'd like to create a little more organization and more professionalism, and hopefully aid in the visibly-pleasing factor considering I've been told my blog is intimidating to navigate (and I have to agree...and it's my blog!)
  5. I don't think there's a fifth thing in the works, but if something comes along you can guarantee I'll share it!

Writing

Well, I wanted to write something today. I guess the morning is still relatively young. I just have nothing and I'm super fatigued. I've been up since 7 a.m., which is rather big for me (in case you haven't been keeping up with "Chronic Daily"), and considering I didn't sleep that great last night either. But man have I been feeling on a roll! This storyboarding via powerpoint has been so great! I truly cannot believe I've survived this long without it!

Sorry but that's all for now, people. Maybe I'll right back later?
Peace!

Storyboarding via Powerpoing

Stuck in a rut and don't know why? I was having this problem not a few hours earlier regarding one specific chapter. I got into an even worse pitfall questioning if my choice of cover was the right one, and how far I should go in reference to a change in title.... I took a step back and went to the Microsoft Store for some storyboarding help as I saw in "Jane the Virgin". If you don't know the show, I won't bore you with details aside from the fact the main character being Jane is a writer not unlike myself (though she's into romances. Still though.). She used note cards around her wall to determine how her novel was going and where to add plot twists, etc. I'm not anywhere near that level of planning with this book, but I decided via some inspiration to do my own type of storyboarding.

I came back empty handed. There was nothing I could find that I felt would truly fit my needs. Either apps were broken, spendy (I wanted totally free!), or something else just wasn't quite right with it. So I thought about powerpoint. GoogleDrive has powerpoint, I remembered (after a long, fruitless search for ppt. apps). And so I have spent several long minutes (almost an hour!) using a template and storyboarding my idea as a powerpoint. And omigod has it seriously helped!

To give you my own personal example, you can find the original work in the "Helpful Hints" section with the same name as this post to make the search simple. I did block out anything I was afraid would be a spoiler, sorry if there was something I didn't cross off you wish you didn't know. I wasn't too picky considering the book has been long in the making and still has a long time to go still.

Anyways, that's it for tonight. I think I'll come back tomorrow and post something else new. I'm feeling rather inspired [finally] 💖🖉💻

Happy (2nd) Blogiversary!!!

I honestly can't believe I have been keeping up with this blog. As painful and as difficult as it has been at times, it has also been an incredible source of my pride and joy. I'm honestly surprised it's been two years since I started recording my crazy insane journey with writing, and how it's evolved even since I began "The Secret Writer". It's truly been...something. Wild, painful, fun, enlightening, humbling...I could go on. But instead I just want to say thank you to everyone who has been reading along and following me on this journey.

Thank you all!

-Sabrina

Busy With Health

It probably doesn't come much as a surprise, but I have been dealing with my health stuff and it's been making me incredibly preoccupied. Granted I am doing good right now: focusing the energy I have by working on my health blog (originally my "Springing into Action" blog that I revamped). I will have to start dividing my time between my two blogs of course, but I believe I can make it work.

Speaking of, I feel like now would be a really great time to start editing this blog a bit; finally add those QOTM's to a very missing list...

New QOTM

Finally got something done as I added a QOTM for April 2018, not to mention I added January's to the QOTM list! Look for more updated changes to come 😊

Updates Coming & A New Blog Happened

I haven't been able to get to finishing—or even starting—on the updates because #HealthProbs, and I am really sorry for it. I have neglected both my readers and my blog. However I will be getting to it, I swear. I'll be on a flight to Colorado this Thursday and I will be able to start dedicating my time to it then.

Currently I am using my phone to post this, so, there's that. Blogger via my phone doesn't allow me to change layouts, or add QOTMs, etc. However I can create new posts so there's that.

If you want to stay caught up to date on when those changes will be made, or get an insider's look at what's going on with my health, you can visit me at my new blog: Springing into Action

A Very Prolonged Absence

Due to health complications amidst school and homework, I haven't even thought about my blog. I decided to check in on it just randomly... THREE MONTHS! I haven't posted anything in almost three months! And I've completely forgotten to update the quote of the month altogether since January! Well, it's April now.... I can't believe it.

Come morning I will make a crazy new announcement that may make a lot of people here shocked, and I will also be devoting my time to making the necessary changes & updates I've fallen so far behind on.

I am sorry I have been away so long! Hopefully ya'll are still with me.

Thanks,
Sabrina

How to Format a Manuscript:

"Briefly, the format of your manuscript must be:
a. in a word processing format (i.e. MS Word or LaTeX [1]). DO NOT SUBMIT PDF DOCUMENTS (PDF figures are ok).
b. single column
c. double spaced lines
d. line numbers
e. adhere to the reference format standard for the journal
f. figures must be uploaded separately and properly labelled during the submission process.
g. provide a separate list of figure captions and table captions at the end of the text document."
-Template for Guide for Authors

For more on how to format a manuscript for a publishing house see the link titled "Guide for Authors – Computers & Geosciences" as the above information was taken directly from there. There is a lot of useful information there, although it is heavy to read, and therefore maybe a bit dense/complicating to understand or fully comprehend. But I will break it for anyone who asks me to down if need be. However I should note that as it says in the title, this template is geared more towards scientific works. For a sparknotes version that is relevant to novels rather than textbooks or something of the likes, look for the title "How to Format a Novel Manuscript" in my links list. Thanks!

[1] this is my own personal footnote; I should mention that Libre Office is just fine for submitting fiction work; LaTeX is standard for publishing scientific stuff and therefore you don't need to worry about it, CRWR people!

I Need Sleep...Or Sugar

I am so exhausted yet I am supposed to be finishing a writing exercise due in little over two hours and I am so tired I can't think of what to write. Ugh!

I a working on chugging an energy drink but it's just not helping. I am just not waking up. I'm also a little chilled where I'm at so it's possible my body is trying to hibernate.... Yes, I tend to shut down when I'm cold. Weird, right?

Well I don't know what to do right this moment. I may go try to get my circulation moving and get some sugary snack in a feeble attempt to boost my energy. But that's about all I can think of.

What do you do when you're in my situation?

#Out

I have been unable to post for awhile now, and fair warning right now that I am going to be unable to post anything else for the time being. My health is on a nice spin-out (if that's even a phrase), and it's not looking to hopeful thus I'm more than likely going to be out of commission for a few.

Don't worry people, I am fine; I'm not dying— I certainly don't need any new organs or the like. I've 'just' been dealing with rotating painful migraines and fibrofog about every 3 hours; basically when I'm not in pain I'm unable think (or read, or write). And I don't have many clarity-filled moments except when I first wake up from sleeping or a nap, or after I finish eating...that's about it. Somehow my professor's are impressed that I've managed to stay on top of my work. But that's about all I can do, and even then I feel like I'm 100 yards behind all the other students, doing my work buried underground, breathing dirt, and blind.

Still, I've got to say I'd much rather be like this than how I was over the course of the last 3 months when one of my many doc's and I tried a new drug (new to me, not to the rest of the world). It was supposed to be in my system for 3 months and wear off on its own. I admit it worked alright on the account of I didn't have a single migraine or a fibrofog episode for that entire time...but there was the down fall of a 3 month bout of apathy and depression, which might have been seen on my sporadically tracked blog. I cared about nothing. I loved nothing. At least since the drug has worn off (as of the beginning of January) I care that I'm in pain. At least I am able to love the people around me even if I can't verbalize it. (Fibrofog renders me unable to communicate.)

Well, that's my update. I generally don't like to write about my health issues—I admit I like keeping them in the dark. But simultaneously there's something freeing about writing about this, about just being 'out' with it.

P.s.: I'm getting a weird sense of deja vu...did I write about something like this before?

Finally! A New Post & A New Quote

I have been "off my game" so to speak from a three month-long medication dosage that caused horrible apathy and depression, until rather recently when it at last wore off. As a result I have finally added a new quote of the month (December's missing 'piece' will be available under the usual quote spot). In addition I feel I should apologize for making this month's quote so atrociously huge. I have no way of shrinking this unless I completely want to do it over as I create these looks myself, and I don't have any interest. Hopefully you all can deal with the abrasive largeness of this month's quote. Honestly, it has already started to grow on me...almost.

With that said: I don't have any helpful tips for ya'll just yet considering I'm finally now getting back in the swing of things. Hopefully I haven't lost any of you readers in this very long process, or will lose any of you while I work on getting other 'blog stuff' up and running again. For those of you sticking around I thank you deeply and sincerely for your patience.

Now it's personal update time:
I'm going to start a bullet/2018 goals journal that will (hopefully) help me stay on track regarding my 2018 birthday/shared New Year's resolutions. I also got THE perfect traveler's mug (becuase I surprisingly don't have one!)

It's a combo of all my favorite things! Photography, editing, and spring (very floral). I'm super happy with it, even if it's not exactly centered directly towards writing. But I'm not going to look at it like that. Want your own #EditingDay gear? Follow the #'s for the Amazon links below ! And yes, some of it actually IS geared SPECIFICALLY towards writing and not just for photography buffs. Since I happen to be both.... But like I said, find your own style today!

#AmazonEditingDayGear

I don't have much more to say. And I have to begin brainstorming for a short story I have to write by Wednesday for my workshop/writing class...and read the material for that day too...yeah, I need to get on that, so I'm signing off.

P.s.: It feels really, REALLY great to write on my blog again! 💖💻

Happy New Year!!

Well it's now 2018...that doesn't seem possible. A lot of new changes have taken part in my life... I don't wish to get overly personal here, but my am I happy!

As it is the New Year one massive cliche that's out there is Resolutions. Unlike basically everyone out there I don't create these for the new year holiday but on every birthday, then share them with others on the new year. I have my reasons for this but I don't wish to get sidetracked now by explaining what these are. So as per my personal tradition here are my goals and resolutions:

1. Stay serious about creating a space for Brigid; she's a goddess of Ireland pre-Catholicism with an interesting web of religious from shamanism, paganism, Christianity, Catholisicm, etc. And I want to combine these together
2. Look for job/internship/volunteer position. I need money and want money; tired of being unable to contribute in my household other than being a student. However I also want to contribute to the world (via volunteering), and my future career (by getting an internship). I don't see myself being able to do all three. Hell, I'll realistically be able to only do one of these things
3. Edit 10-15 pages every other day of Shattered Lives. (Super goal is 20 pages)
4. Write 10-15 pages every other day of Changing Kathryn. (Super goal is 20 pages)
5. Limit book research to 30-35 minutes
--TBC--

So those are some of my resolutions/goals to start. I'm still working on some, and have a few other, more personal goals I don't feel I should post here. But this is a good start. Share any of your less-personal or writing/reading goals if you have any!
